This programme is offered as an interfaculty programme of the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.
The MSc in Diabetes Care is designed to equip you as a future healthcare professional involved in the care of patients suffering from diabetes mellitus with the necessary knowledge, skills and competences relevant to your holistic patient-centred care practice. Through pursuing this avenue of continuing your professional development, you will be in a position to contribute to a highly professional multidisciplinary approach to management by identifying, analysing, and planning the management of patients suffering from this multisystem disorder which can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, you will be able to proactively influence policy and decision making by being in a position to advise healthcare service providers effectively and appropriately.
the degree of Master of Dental Surgery awarded from July 2018 onwards or
the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) with at least Second Class or
the degree of Master of Pharmacy or
the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) obtained with at least Second Class in an area of study deemed suitable by the Board of Studies or
a qualification deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board of Studies, to be equivalent to the qualifications listed in (a) to (f) above.
The maximum number of students that can be admitted to the course is 10 students.
During the first year of the Course, accepted students shall be required to undergo an occupational health assessment so as to ascertain that they are fit to undertake work related to clinical placements. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. Failure to disclose information about a physical or mental health problem that could affect patient safety is considered to be a serious breach of the University Suitability to Practise Regulations.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the Degree of Master of Science in Diabetes Care - M.Sc. -, under the auspices of the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
explain the epidemiology, pathophysiology and classification of diabetes;
identify and appraise evidence in relation to the prevention of diabetes;
critically discuss issues related to screening for diabetes;
plan, deliver and evaluate the care in relation to Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes taking a holistic perspective;
identify and appraise the different aspects of care in relation to the impact of living with diabetes, including psychological, financial, social and spiritual issues; and,
explain theories related to self-care.
Subject Knowledge and understanding

plan care in response to the person's cultural and religious practices or preference.

evaluate evidence in relation to prevention, screening and management;
explain local and international policy, guidelines and standards for diabetes care including legal and entitlement processes;
identify and appraise the different roles of the interdisciplinary team members involved in diabetes care; and
